The Racycle, built by the Miami Cycle & Mfg Co, had many unique features that separated it from the rest of the crowd. Its top-of-the-range Pacemaker model had optional spring forks and a large chainwheel. The Roadster, featured here, was the regular model. Unlike most American bicycles, which were fitted with wooden wheels, the Racycle used metal wheel rims so it could be fitted with normal pneumatic Clincher tyres. The Miami Cycle & Mfg Co bought the Flying Merkel brand in 1911 and Flying Merkel bicycles and motorcycles first appeared in Miami catalogues halfway through 1912, boosting the profile of the company.

(Now sold)

This Racycle appears to have been in the UK for a long time; my friend remembers seeing it in the 1970s. As you can see, it has British style brakes and mudguards. The ‘Miami Cycle Co’ advertised worldwide sales at this time – their motorcycles, including the ‘Flying Merkel’, were well-promoted – so I wonder if the ‘Model 174’ was sold through their London office?
This Racycle Roadster has had a cursory respray to make it presentable, and is fully functional and ready to ride. The adjustable handlebars can be moved to any position. Racycles in top condition are sought-after and expensive in the USA. This is an ideal opportunity to buy one that’s already in Europe and at a budget price.
