1898 Beeston Humber ‘Demountable’ (Humber Patent Detachable Joints)

1898 Beeston Humber ‘Demountable’

with Humber Patent Detachable Joints

28″ Wheels

Frame No 66189

This is a progress report on the 1898 Beeston Humber Demountable we have in the workshop. Barry has demounted most of the frame members and has been removing rust and cleaning the parts. Above and below you can see how it was illustrated in the 1898 catalogue packed into a wicker storage basket. I’ve now ordered a similar wicker basket and after the basketmaker has completed it, I’ll show it fitted inside.

This has also been an excellent opportunity to illustrate various unique components on 1898 Humbers, such as the adjustable pedals and cranks,

ADJUSTABLE CRANKS

The pedals can be fitted in various positions to extend or decrease the length of the cranks.

DETACHABLE CRANK & GEAR WHEEL

Below you can see a close up picture of  the bolt that secures the chainwheel in place.

SWING CHAIN ADJUSTMENT

DETACHABLE JOINTS & BRAZELESS FRAMES

MISCELLANEOUS PARTS CLEANED UP :

INSTANTER PUMP CLIPS & CLIMAX BELL

BROOKS B28 SADDLE

As you can see in the 1898 Humber catalogue extract below, the B28 was suggested as an option.

As I have one in good condition and it’s an interesting saddle design, I’ll use it when the machine is re-assembled.

1899 BEESTON HUMBER DEMOUNTABLE

Here’s my 1899 Humber Demountable for comparison. This one is fully equipped with Bowden brakes front and rear, so would be ideal for the London-Brighton Veteran Run.
