The Victorian era was replete with new mechanical inventions. The velocipede was a French invention. But after France and Germany went to war in 1870, Britain took over the manufacture of velocipedes. Blacksmiths, wheelwrights, sewing machine and gun manufacturers – in fact anyone with an engineering workshop – had a go at making velocipedes. This was the start of the British cycle industry…
