1899 Hatherley Folding Cycle Stand

1899 Hatherley Folding Wooden Cycle Stand

STANDING: 27″ x 14 x 22″

FOLDED: 30″ x 5 x 14″

I’ve only come across one other Hatherley Cycle Stand, which is on display at the National Cycle Museum in Llandrindod Wells, Wales.

The Hatherley was designed by Allen Jones & Co, who specialized in folding wooden furniture. Other cycle stands on offer around the turn of the century were made of metal, so were too heavy and bulky to carry around, whereas this one could easily be folded up to carry on the rear carrier rack of a bicycle. It’s in excellent condition despite being 125 years old.

My friend James (author of ‘The Tandem’ series of books) spotted it illustrated in an 1899 map book and sent me the 1899 illustrations.
