1920s Cycles Wonder pour Femme

The Wonder Woman character first appeared in ‘All Star Comics’ No 8, in October 1941 (above). But the ‘Wonder’ brand was actually created in 1910, as a subsidiary of the French cycle manufacturer ‘La Société anonyme des Etablissements Ravat’. ‘Cycles Wonder’ was well known for its racing successes and also for its range of innovative and colourful publicity posters.

The latest incarnation of Wonder Woman is famously played by the beautiful Israeli actor Gal Gadot. You can see a screenshot from her film below, with my 1906 Royal Premier bicycle behind her, which I had hired to the film production company.

The pair of bicycles featured in here are a Wonder woman’s bicycle and a Wonder man’s (X frame) bicycle.

St Etienne, France

Ravat was founded in 1898 by Jules Ravat and Auguste Argaud. By 1925 the company had grown to a business with 1200 employees and a production of 80,000 bicycles and motorcycles.

Wonder Cycles, another Ravat brand, was created in 1910, with a star as its badge logo. It was well known for its racing successes and also for its range of innovative and colourful publicity posters.

The Ravat company was sold to Mercier, another St Etienne manufacturer, in 1954.
