Sturmey-Archer ‘Model K’ Three-Speed Gear
(Now sold)
One of the best selling bicycles in early decades of the 20th century was the Royal Enfield Girder model. The key to the extra-strong frame of the Royal Enfield Girder was the duplex tubing behind the bottom bracket.
This attractive Royal Enfield features the Royal Enfield ‘3 Cannon’ chainwheel (introduced in 1913). The three-speed gear is a Sturmey-Archer ‘Model K’ which came out in 1921, and was popular after World War 1 (three-speed production had stopped during the war so the Sturmey-Archer factory could make fuses).
It retains most of its original steering head transfer (decal). It looks like the rest of the metal was repainted some decades ago, and the paintwork is quite weathered. The nickel is in reasonable condition. The handlebar grips and saddle are later additions. The Girder is in excellent all round condition and ready to ride.
