1938 Claud Butler ‘C.B Polo-Bike’

PRINCE PHILIP – on a C.B POLO-BIKE?

1930s Claud Butler ‘C.B Polo-Bike’

22″ Frame

36.5′ Wheelbase

This machine was used by a polo club for many years, with its wheels replaced at some time during its life. I’ve kept it in the condition it arrived from the Polo Club. Working bikes such as this tended to get beaten up, so there are few survivors.  It’s rideable and would be an ideal candidate for displaying at shows, but it really deserves a place in a museum where visitors can learn about the history of bicycle polo.

BICYCLE POLO HISTORY

Bicycle polo was invented in 1891 by Irish cycling champion Richard Mecredy, editor of ‘The Irish Cyclist’ magazine. By 1900, clubs were popping up across the globe, with international matches being played.
It featured as a demonstration sport at the 1908 Olympics. Ireland (competing as a separate nation from Britain) beat Germany 3-1 in the final at London’s White City stadium.
