In Britain in the 1930s, bicycles often had a small sidecar fitted for a child to sit in so that a family could go on weekend outings. But in France a ‘remorque’ (trailer) was the favoured option, used for carrying shopping, luggage …or, as you can see here, sometimes for the family.

The 1930s Polaire has rather a long list of interesting fittings and accessories. The chainset is an upmarket racing one, with fluted pedal cranks. Its pedals are the attractive split rubber type (also known as four bar), in white, and there is also a bell. The mudguards are hammered aluminium in the style of the French company Martele. It has a sprung front fork, which I think must have been an accessory. The bicycle is in excellent original unrestored condition, with transfers (decals) declaring it to be ‘Type: Champion du Monde’.
The large doll is sitting in a metal child’s cycle seat. The doll belonged to Rita, from Lewes, East Sussex. She was born in 1939, and owned the doll just after the war.
The dog’s name is Shep, and his label says ‘Lines Bros (Ireland) Ltd’. He keeps jumping out of his basket 🙂

Shep the dog came from Christine in Hertfordshire, and was much loved by her family. He was originally a pushalong dog, but I freed him from his frame. That’s probably why he will not stay in the basket but prefers to scamper around.
