SPECIALLY CONSTRUCTED MODEL with STURMEY-ARCHER HUB BRAKES FRONT & REAR

Sturmey-Archer introduced hub gears to much acclaim in 1931 and, the following year, customers were able to buy bicycles from the top manufacturers featuring this new innovation. Humber offered it as an option for their Olympia range. It changed the specification of the Ladies Model No 52 to a Model X No 54.

Humber’s offerings for 1932 were tailored to suit the economic constraints of the era. The bicycles used the Olympia name – which had been introduced in 1921 for Humber’s economy models – but had all the trappings of the company’s most luxurious models, such as the Beeston duplex forks. This lady’s model included full chaincase and chrome handlebars and, as an optional extra, hub gears, controlled by a handlebar-mounted ‘K Pattern’ barrel changer.

This example is fitted with an expensive Brooks ornate saddle. It has been very nicely restored and is ready to ride.
