1935 Mochet Velocar ‘Familial’

Introduced in 1929, the first models of the pedal-operated velocar had a pointed front, as seen in these photos. Three versions were offered, the standard two-seater (above); and two models with a open box at the back. On one of these, the Camionette, this was used for luggage; while the Familial (below) had two small bench seats in it for children to sit on. In 1934, a new design was introduced, with a rounded front end.

My friend Paul owned this Mochet Velocar for many years. Around 12 years ago he decided to restore it to protect the plywood bodywork, adding a new outer skin and a cover for the rear ‘pick-up’ box. This example has two small seats suitable for children to sit facing each other, which means it is the ‘Familial’ model. Without those small seats the same model became a ‘Camionette’ as illustrated below. With its lid on the rear box it could be either model!

Paul has used the Velocar frequently at veteran cycle events. As you can see, it’s in excellent all round condition, and it’s ready to ride and display.
