A Hunter on a Mechanical Horse.

As you can see from the cartoon above, the idea of combining a horse and a tricycle to create a mechanical beast was a wish from the earliest days of the bicycle. By the 1930s, mechanical contraptions made the news. ‘Mechanical Willie’, below, appeared in Popular Science magazine in August, 1934.

The ‘horse of steel’ was illustrated in the same periodical in April, 1933.

The world was obviously ready for a viable mechanical horse tricycle, and the Canterpony, which made its debut in 1937, did not disappoint. It cantered, galloped, and turned with ease, and was announced as…
