Rudge-Whitworth was one of the world’s top bicycle manufacturers over many decades. With the introduction of lightweight bicycles, the style of their 1930s Roadsters was already outdated by the 1930s. However, Rudge-Whitworth had pioneered lightweight bicycle design in the early years of the twentieth century and their roadster style of bicycle was not heavy. This lightweight roadster design was particularly popular abroad.

This 1937 Rudge-Whitworth Light Tourist is a ‘barn find.’ After being located after many years of storage, it was given to the Coventry Transport Museum, who preserved it without any restoration. So it is still unrestored, with its chrome tarnished, but its transfers (decals) intact, including the famous logo ‘By Appointment to His Majesty the King’ on both the chaincase and the seat tube.
I’ve not done anything to it cosmetically. It could easily be improved cosmetically if required, by rubbing off the surface rust and polishing it. I only mechanically renovated it, fitted new tyres and tubes, and last week took it for a ride along Brighton sea front, stopping off at the Brighton Pier to take these photos.
