1966 VW Splitscreen Roadster

(Now sold)

I bought this VW in 2006 in South Africa, where it had had its roof removed for the seller’s wedding. I had it restored, with front and rear suspension lowered, and busboys straight axle and VW type 3 gearbox fitted. The chassis was strengthened and a half rollcage created for the driver and front passenger. It has an opening windscreen for added ventilation. I had rear fender skirts fabricated and added Mooneyes wheel trims. There are discreet custom touches.
I used it for a few years for wedding and proms hire, but my day job became too busy so it has not had much use. There is no roof, but it has separate tonneau covers for the back and the front. The engine is a stock 1600cc. I don’t drive it over 50mph.
Wherever I go with it, people stop and stare, wave, smile, and when I park it there’s always a crowd around it taking photos. It stands out at any car show. But after 17 years ownership I’m ready to move on, and I now have a new classic car. So it’s time for a new family to enjoy it.
