1990 Strutt Worksong Folding X Frame
Mk 1
Sturmey-Archer 5 speed gears
22″ Frame
24 x 1 3/8″ Wheels
The Strutt Worksong was built for only a short time after it was introduced in 1989. It’s an excellent bicycle, benefitting from a unique cross-frame design as well as being a folding model. However, the British economy was not good in the early 1990s and the Worksong was not a cheap bicycle to produce.
I became interested in them because they were built at Hurn Airport in Dorset. I had a garage restoring and selling vintage cars and motorcycles nearby, in Bournemouth, during the 1980s, and I used to park my double decker bus at Hurn Airport, near the Strutt workshop.
This Mark 1 model in red is the third Worksong I’ve owned. It’s in very good all round original condition and ready to ride.
THE WORKSONG FOLDED
METALCRAFT, BUILDING 105,
HURN AIRPORT INDUSTRIAL ESTATE
After I bought my first Strutt Worksong (a Mark 1), I visited the building that was used by ‘Metalwork’ to build the Worksong. Here’s a photo of that bike next to its old premises. As you can see, the place is now derelict. Most of the estate has been redeveloped with new buildings, and I was told that these old buildings (dating from WW2) are due for demolition too.
