1868/1869 Serpentine First Pattern Velocipede (French)
93cm Front wheel
83cm Rear Wheel
(Now sold)
The first velocipede design has a curved main frame that sweeps over the rear wheel, with two supports on either side to the rear axle.
The subsequent design had a straighter frame that directly connects the steering head to the rear axle. It was, no doubt, much easier to produce and stronger too.
As this first model curves in such an aesthetically pleasing way to reflect the shape of the wheels, it became known as a ‘Serpentine.’
Few of this early design have survived. By now, over 155 years later, it has developed a mythical and iconic status.
This one has similarities to both the early Michaux and Sargent serpentines, but its brake design is closer to the Michaux. However, its maker is (so far) unknown.
The aspect that I find most fascinating is that not only does the frame curve like a snake, it is also rounded. Though solid iron, it has been filed so that the frame has the appearance of the hollow tubing on later bicycles.
The Serpentine came from a museum collection. It’s totally original, with traces of its original paint, and is in very good condition all round.
