1908 Ariel Crabbe 2-speed gear

(Now sold)

George Ernest Crabbe was the inventor of one of the first cycle rim brakes, in 1900. Components Ltd, proprietors of the Ariel Cycle Co (and also the Rover Cycle Co in 1912) acquired many patents, including those for Westwood metal wheel rims and Dunlop pneumatic tyres. Their purchase of the Crabbe patents, which subsequently included 2-speed and 3-speed gears, enabled their bicycles to compete against the top manufacturers. The Crabbe 2-speed gear patent was registered to Charles Sangster (managing director of Components Ltd) on 15 March, 1905, as ‘Improvements in Two-speed Driving Mechanism for Cycles.’
