THE COLUMBIA BICYCLET

In the 1920s, ‘pavement’ or ‘sidewalk’ bikes were a popular style of bicycles for young children. The lower centre of gravity, low main tube and small wheels meant that this was the type of bicycle on which many kids learned to ride. Columbia advertised their ‘Bicyclet’ as being suitable for children aged between 5 and 12. The Columbia Bicyclet, suitable for both boys and girls, was one of the leading brands, parents realising, of course, that they were built to the same high standard as the company’s adult bicycles.

Ken Kowal, the Columbia expert, informs me that up to 1927 Columbia used a ‘Rubwood’ solid wheel on their sidewalk bikes (you can see 1925 illustrations of the solid wheel above and below), which means that this example is 1928 or 1929.

The Royal Pavilion was purchased from Queen Victoria as a result of the Brighton Improvement (Purchase of the Royal Pavilion and Grounds) Act 1850. This magnificent royal pleasure palace is the crowning glory of a city already blessed with a wonderful architectural heritage.
