1930s Aluminium Horse Tricycle
LENGTH: 39″
11″ Wheels
Ornate Saddle Design
This horse tricycle was an expensive riding toy in its day. The horse body is cast aluminium and, as you can see in the photos, the pedals are well made and its saddle is molded with an attractive pattern of cowboys, boots, horses etc. It’s quite heavy to lift and appears sturdy. The tricycle is an older restoration and is fully functional.
Until recently it was on display in a museum alongside its friend, the 1930s pressed steel ‘PonyCycle’ tricycle also pictured. They make an interesting comparison: this aluminium tricycle has conventional steering – with the steering head through the horse’s body to turn the small front wheel; while the ‘PonyCycle’ tricycle, with a large front wheel, is articulated behind its head so that when the handlebar is turned the whole of the front end turns to steer the tricycle.
In the 21st century, the market has been flooded with recently made reproduction children’s horse tricycles which are more often than not advertised by unscrupulous antique dealers as genuine items. So it’s refreshing to see the two here which are obviously of prewar manufacture.
