During World War 2, the Ministry of Supply was created to unify military procurement. This single government agency negotiated contracts, set standardized specifications for cycle makers (such as the Mark IV and Mark V heavy-duty or airborne folding bicycles), and managed raw material rationing for factories. After manufacturers had completed the orders, the cycles were allocated and distributed by the Ministry of Supply to the War Office (Army) or the Air Ministry (RAF) based on service needs.
The bicycles that Armstrong supplied were based on their carrier models, which had stronger frames. Whereas the carriers had 26 x 1 3/4″ wheels, Armstrong military models had 26 x 1 1/2″ wheels. This example is in excellent original unrestored condition, retaining its original transfers (decals) and military markings. It has a rubber Dunlop saddle, larger pedals suitable for riders wearing boots, and a Brooks military toolbag marked ‘1945.’ It is ready to display and ride.
