1940s Chainless (Shaft-drive) Quadricycle
12″ Wheels
LENGTH: 42″
WIDTH: 19″
HEIGHT: 23″
The manufacturer of this chainless (shaft-drive) quadricycle is a mystery. It is vaguely similar to the Kar-Bike, though that is pedal-operated and belt-driven. The Kar-Bike was originally sold by Metal Specialities Co, in 1947, but the following year it was market by Weller Products Inc, who claimed to be the originators. The only clue to the identify of this chainless model is the hubcaps, which have a double letter W in the centre, possibly a connection with Weller Products?
It appears to be a contemporary of the Kar-Bike, but nothing in its construction seems to have anything in common. Perhaps it was inspired by the Kar-Bike? Or was a subsequent prototype built by E.J Weller (though I’ve not yet found any patents for it). Nor does it appear to have anything in common with the Gearcycle tricycle apart from the shaft-drive.

ADDITIONAL WELLER PATENTS
After patenting the version of the Kar-Bike that went into production (above), Elyert J Weller also patented the variation illustrated below. Prototypes do exist.
Many unusual patents were registered after WW2, many of which did not make it to production. One example, which cites E.J Weller’s Kar-Bike patent as a source, is Raymond R Taylor’s space-frame pedal car patent, below.
