A. Christian’s 1869 patent provided the design for the first children’s tricycles. It was superseded after Western Toy Co patented a velocipede pedal tricycle in 1875. Perhaps, with the new patent protected, juvenile tricycle manufacturers were, at first, forced to stick to the older design. By the 1880s, velocipede tricycles dominated.
