1946-AUTOWAGON

American Metalcraft Corporation was founded in 1939 by A. F. Hebbeler. Amcraft Inc was a subsidiary specialising in light stampings, smaller metal stamping dies, machining, and some welding. In 1976, Mr. Hebbeler sold American Metalcraft Corp and kept Amcraft and its product line.

The Autowagon was announced at the 1946 New York Toy Fair.

INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER Co AUTOWAGON

The ‘autowagon’ name was not new: the International Harvester Co used it for one of their cars first produced in 1909. By 1912 the Auto Wagons could be purchased with either air or water cooling. It’s likely that American Metalcraft Corp chose this name for their children’s wagon because parents and grandparents were the purchasers of toys – for their children – and it would have been a name they were familiar with.
