The Quadrant Tricycle Co was one of the world’s leading manufacturers in the early days of cycling, introducing many innovations in bicycles and tricycles. The ‘Dwarf Safety’ featured here is a basic model that was developed into various forms of spring frame over the following three years, including several varieties of sprung saddle and seat post, sprung front wheel, and sprung front fork.
1889 Quadrant ‘No 17’ Dwarf Safety Roadster
with Quadrant Suspension Wheel & Saddle
21″ Frame
30″ Front Spring Wheel with Solid tyre
28″ Rear Wheel with Cushion tyre
(Now sold)
These two Quadrant accessories were not offered together, ready fitted to a bicycle. The spring saddle did go into production, and sold successfully. However, the Quadrant spring wheel was a prototype, used for display only.
The spring wheel that you see here was purchased separately from the bicycle. I think you’ll agree though that, in terms of design and size, it looks like it was made for this bicycle!
This rare suspension safety bicycle has been restored and is ready to ride.
