When I was photographing this 1920s Hendee Indian coaster wagon in Ovingdean in 2016, a horse and rider walked past …and the horse mistook the wagon for its food trough
1924 Hendee Indian Coaster Wagon
10 X 2.75″ Wheels with solid tyres
LENGTH: 43″
WIDTH: 23″
HEIGHT: 28″
The Indian company name was originally ‘Hendee Mfg Co’. It changed to ‘Indian Motorcycle Co’ in 1924. You can compare the two different head badges on my Indian bicycles towards the bottom of this page. As the decal on this coaster wagon displays the latter name, I assume it to be from 1924 onwards. A wooden coaster wagon is illustrated in the Indian catalogue, but I’ve not yet found a larger metal one like this.
Indian bicycles were supplied by Davis Mfg Co. This wagon has a decal ‘LEX’ on the back, which I assume relates to the company that supplied it to Indian Motorcycle Co.
